How the heck does this work?

I want to add a "button," or one of those square things that sit in the margin of a blog.  I've done it twice before, which would mean (normally) that I could do it again, but alas, no can do.  If you're out there Summer or Ashley (or anyone else), please share that skill with me...ok?
